South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is a animated satirical comedy/musical film released in 1999 and based on the animated television series South Park. The film is often referred to as South Park: The Movie or shortened to SP:BLU. The film pokes fun at animated Disney films such as Beauty and the Beast and features 12 songs by Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman. The song "Blame Canada" was nominated for an Academy Award. Parker in a VH1 special said he heard that Stephen Sondheim, famed musical theatre composer and lyricist, thinks South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is the best musical he's seen in the past 15 years. Parker joked about writing Sondheim a response saying, "We think you've done some good work, too."

The film introduces a few new minor South Park characters, including Gregory of Yardale and The Mole. The Mole has made a few cameo appearances on the TV series; he was shown on a TV talk show in one episode.

[edit] Plot

The film begins with Stan Marsh, Kenny McCormick, Eric Cartman, Kyle Broflovski and Ike Broflovski going to see Asses of Fire, a profanity-filled movie starring fictional Canadians Terrance and Phillip. However, as it is R-rated, they are refused admission. As a result, they pay a homeless man to accompany them. During the film, everyone else in the cinema leaves due to the amount of profanity, especially during the song Uncle Fucka.

When their swearing increases after they see the film, their classmates rush to see it. The enraged members of South Park's PTA, led by Kyle's mother, Sheila Broflovski, try to get rid of the film, but the kids still go see it again and again. Cartman and Kenny get into a fight over whether it is possible to light farts on fire like Terrance does in the movie. Kenny, acting on Cartman's dare, tries it and bursts into flames. The doctors fail to save him, and he goes to hell.

Kenny's death prompts the parents to form "Mothers Against Canada" (MAC). They decide to get all things Canadian removed from the United States and to capture Terrance and Phillip. The angry Canadians respond by bombing the Alec Baldwin residence. The United States declares war on Canada, and Ms. Brovlovski, recently appointed Secretary of War, orders the execution of "war criminals" Terrance and Phillip. When Ms. Brovlovski overhears Cartman sing a song entitled "Kyle's Mom Is a Bitch," he is forced to have a V-Chip placed in his brain in order to prevent him from swearing.

Meanwhile in hell, Satan is torturing Kenny when Saddam Hussein appears and reveals that he is Satan's lover. When Satan discovers that a war has started on earth, he says with delight that it has been prophecized that he can return to earth once the blood of "the innocent" touches the ground. Saddam proves to be an abusive lover, but Satan cannot stand up to him. At one point in the film Satan can be seen trying to understand Saddam better by reading a book entitled Saddam is from Mars, Satan is from Venus, a parody of the popular book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus by John Gray. Although Satan agrees with Kenny's suggestion that he leave Saddam, he cannot bring himself to do it, and they agree to go to the surface together.

With Terrance and Phillip set to be executed, Kyle, Stan, and Cartman decide to do "what Brian Boitano would do" and form "La Resistance". A new boy in South Park, Gregory of Yardale, comes up with a daring plan to rescue Terrance and Phillip. Stan, who is concerned that his girlfriend, Wendy, is interested in Gregory, insists upon implementing the plan so that Wendy will like him but keeps in mind Chef's advice that to get Wendy's love he needs to find the clitoris. Stan, Kyle, and Cartman are sent to find "The Mole", who turns out to be a God-hating French boy. He agrees to help them rescue Terrance and Phillip, who are to be executed in the electric chair during a USO show.

The USO show begins, and the boys start executing the plan. Cartman, tasked with turning off the power shortly before the execution begins, is frightened when the ghost of Kenny warns him that Saddam and Satan are coming. Cartman runs away without turning off the power, causing the Mole to be spotted and killed by guard dogs. Kyle and Stan desperately run to the stage to prevent the execution, but Kyle cannot bring himself to stand up to his mom. Ms. Brovlovski orders it to start.

Suddenly a Canadian attack begins. Cartman rushes to turn off the electric chairs and receives a mild jolt that causes the V-Chip to start going crazy. The Americans and Canadians start battling each other. Stan finds the "clitoris" which tells him to save Terrance and Phillip. He asks about Wendy, and the clitoris tells him to be confident because "chicks love confidence". Terrance and Phillip try to escape but the American forces and Ms. Brovlovski corner them. Just as they are about to be killed Stan, Kyle, and the rest of "La Resistance" stand in front of them. Kyle finally decides to stand up to his mom and says he wants her to stop fighting all these battles and just be his mom. She ignores him and shoots Terrance and Phillip in the head.

When their blood touches the ground, Satan and Saddam burst out from hell and begin wreaking havoc. Satan is quickly pushed aside by Saddam, who makes everyone bow down to him while Satan watches. Kenny insists that Satan stand up to Saddam. Cartman discovers that the jolt to the V-Chip gave him the power to shoot electricity when he swears, which he does with gusto, and attacks Saddam. Saddam calls for Satan to help, but Satan finally had enough and kills Saddam.

Satan thanked Kenny for his help and grants him one wish. Kenny wishes for everything to go back to the way it was before the war started, even though that meant he would go back to hell. Satan grants his wish and everything return to normal. Everyone sings a song about their happy ending and in the final scene, Kenny is shown on his way to heaven.

A brief "bonus scene" after the credits shows Ike, Kyle's adopted brother, eating a mouse while waiting in the attic for his mom to return.

[edit] Controversy

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is the most profane animated movie ever produced. It features a song entitled "Uncle Fucka" that uses the word fuck 24 times in a little over a minute. The song title originally used mother rather than uncle, but it was changed to qualify for an R rating (instead of NC-17);[citation needed] also, the composers claim uncle sounds funnier than mother.[citation needed]

The movie's use of profanity gained it a spot in the 2001 edition of the Guinness Book of Records for "Most Swearing in an Animated Film" (399 profane words, including 146 uses of "fuck", 128 offensive gestures and 221 acts of violence). However it is only 78th (as of October 2006) on the list of all films.

Parker and Matt Stone, South Park's creators claim that the movie was originally titled South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose but that the MPAA forced a title change. Parker and Stone countered with South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut as the title, which is a double entendre (with "uncut" also meaning "uncircumcised"). Richard Taylor, a spokesman for the MPAA, denies that any film was submitted with the "All Hell" title and states that the MPAA would not reject the use of the word "hell" in a title. See, for instance, the film adaptation of the books From Hell and Hellboy, or the Hellraiser films. This line was used in a movie trailer for the film.

The film was also banned in Iraq, for its depiction of Saddam Hussein as Satan's lover. [1]. While the real Saddam was on trial for genocide charges in 2006, Matt Stone joked that the U.S. military was showing the movie repeatedly to the former dictator. [2] It was revealed on August 27 2006 that Saddam Hussein had watched the film while in custody. [3]

Film critics were generally enthusiastic about the film as an intelligent and entertaining piece of political satire (81% at Rotten Tomatoes). The Globe and Mail justified giving the movie four stars by saying it was so over the top that it transcended any concept of bad taste and was thus a work of brilliance.

The film caused little controversy in Canada even though it poked fun at the country. Canadian Consul General (and former Prime Minister) Kim Campbell noted that the song "Blame Canada" did not offend her since it was clearly a silly satirical song not intended to insult her country. Well-known Canadian singer Anne Murray allayed concern about the fact that the song referred to her as a "bitch" by indicating that she wasn't offended by the tongue-in-cheek lyric. Murray was invited to sing the song on the Oscar telecast but declined due to a prior commitment. In an early draft of the script Cheesy Poofs are Canadian and so are banned by Mrs. Brovlovski to Cartman's annoyance. The writers may have decided to drop this point to preserve the mystery around the origin of Cheesy Poofs.[citation needed]

Atlantic Records released the movie's soundtrack album on June 22, 1999. The CD inlay states that only the first 12 tracks actually appear in the film (the remainder, described as being "inspired" by the movie, are mostly other acts performing alternate versions of those 12 songs); however, D.V.D.A.'s "What Would Brian Boitano Do? Pt. II" is played in the closing credits. The song "Hell Isn't Good" features vocals from heavy metal band Metallica's James Hetfield but D.V.D.A., not Metallica, provides the music. Paramount Pictures said that Trey Parker was the vocalist, but in February 2000, Hetfield admitted to lending his voice to the song on the metallica.com message boards.[citation needed]

Many of the songs from the movie are included in their full-length versions on the soundtrack even though they were trimmed slightly for the movie. In the film, Satan sings only one line in "I Can Change," but on the album version he sings two. The line on the album version, "But what if you never change?" is replaced in the movie version by Hussein repeating the "I can change, I can change!" line from the chorus. Both are followed by Satan singing, "What if you remain a sandy little butt hole?". Also, in the film version of "Mountain Town", Stan rings the doorbell and wakes up Kenny. In the soundtrack, Kennys mom answers the door.

[edit] Characters unique to the movie

[edit] Gregory of Yardale

Gregory Thorne

He first appears with the other children, ice-skating in a scene meant to parody one from Charlie Brown. He explains that he just moved to South Park from Yardale (probably a portmanteau of Yale and Harvard), "where I had a 4.0 grade point average." In appearance and manner, he appears to be a parody of Enjolras or Jean Valjean characters from the musical Les Miserables. He speaks with a non-rhotic accent and seems somewhat snobby but very intelligent. He takes the de facto role of leading La Resistance. He is an antagonist to Stan, because Stan's girlfriend, Wendy, is interested in him. At the end of the story she decides she does not like him anymore, at least in part because he was snobby to Stan, and says, "Fuck Gregory. Fuck him right in the ear!" He has gained popularity among South Park fans even though he has not appeared in the TV series.

[edit] The Mole

The Mole

Christophe DeLorne

The Mole, whose real name is Christophe, is a French operative who aided Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Eric Cartman in the film as the trio attempted to prevent the United States military from executing Terrance and Phillip. Gregory of Yardale, who was knowledgeable and sophisticated in the ways of politics and warfare, put the kids in contact with the Mole. The kids were shocked to find out that the Mole was a child, albeit a volatile, cynical one. The Mole decided to help the boys sneak into the military base in order to free Terrance and Phillip while the soldiers were distracted by a USO show. Because Cartman (and the ghost of Kenny) botched the plan, the Mole was mortally wounded by the base's guard dogs.

The Mole is a mercenary who specializes in digging and navigating tunnels, hence his nickname. He speaks with an accent, although he is fluent in English. He is not French-Canadian, because unlike other Canadians, his head is in one piece. He claims his mother attempted to abort him. All we know of his mother is that she does not tolerate blasphemy. The Mole, in keeping with his French existentialist stereotype, frequently says derogatory things about God, which get him grounded. The Mole made a very brief appearance on television (as Stan was channel surfing) in the episode Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub, which took place after the movie, proving that Kenny's wish revived him along with the others unless it was a rerun. Christophe has also gained a decent fanbase, including in fanfiction, despite his limited appearances

[edit] Asses of Fire

Image:SOUTH PARK-Asses of Fire.jpg Asses of Fire is a film within the film, the first feature length motion picture starring Terrance and Phillip.

The movie sparked controversy in South Park because its heavy use of bad language influenced children and adults alike to unconsciously incorporate the film's foul language into their speech patterns.

Asses of Fire is a parody of conservative views of the movie, just as Terrance and Phillip's television show seen in the South Park television series is a parody of conservative views of the series.

Like the South Park movie, Asses of Fire is a musical. It features the profane song "Uncle Fucka", which contains over 30 instances of the word fuck and is concerned entirely with (alleged) incestuous sexual relations between Terrance and Phillip and their uncles. The movie's creators may have found inspiration from the experiences of the star of the rock group The Who's rock opera Tommy, whose title character is sexually molested by his Uncle Ernie. "Uncle Fucka" won a 2000 MTV Movie Award for Best Musical Performance.

According to the 2002 South Park episode, "The New Terrance and Phillip Movie Trailer", Asses of Fire had a sequel, Asses of Fire II: Attack of the Cramps, a play on Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Another Terrance and Phillip movie, made for TV, is Terrance and Philip in Not Without My Anus. It delayed the cliffhanger ending to Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut by a week. Many fans complained about this April Fool's joke so the creators made the episode in four days to please the fans.

[edit] Academy Awards

Nominated for Best Song, Blame Canada. Peformed by Robin Williams at the Academy Awards.

It is the second song with profanity out of the four that have been nominated for an Oscar (the first was "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" from Little Shop of Horrors—which coincidentally was written by Beauty and the Beast's Alan Menken and Howard AshmanEminem's Oscar winning song "Lose Yourself" from the film 8 Mile in 2002. The most recent, in 2006, was "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" by the Three 6 Mafia, from Hustle and Flow).

Voice actress Mary Kay Bergman, who provided most of the female voices in the movie, was supposed to perform the song at the Oscars. However Bergman—who had apparently been suffering from a psychological ailment— committed suicide a few months after the film's release. On the telecast Robin Williams performed the song with a full chorus line.

[edit] Trivia

  • Conan O'Brien wished he could have voiced himself.[citation needed] Instead, he was voiced by Brent Spiner. Conan later got to voice a South Park version of himself in the opening for the 2006 Emmy Awards.
  • The German scheiße-Video becomes, in the German version, an 'English sick fetish video' site and contains more dialogue. The man says in a British accent: "wallow in this, yer cunt"/"now eat my poo-poo"/"now gobble it up an' swallow it"/"'ere, bitch, 'ave summore".[citation needed]
  • When Kenny is rushed into the emergency room, a doctor's schedule board on the left side of the screen says Dr. No to "Kill Bond".
  • Kenny is shown for the first time with his hood taken off.
  • Despite coming out only weeks after Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, there is a spoof on Jar Jar Binks in the South Park movie. According to Matt Stone, the spoof was inspired by the first Episode I trailer. Stone explained, "When we saw this thing going, 'Yousa people gonna die?' in the first 'Star Wars' preview, we looked at each other and said, people are going to HATE that thing!"[citation needed]
  • One of the Canadian pilots is voiced by Nick Rhodes, the keyboard player for Duran Duran.
