South Western is a rail franchise in the United Kingdom. It will combine the services operated by South West Trains and Island Line, both of which are currently franchised to Stagecoach. The franchise is due to start on 4 February 2007[1], the day after the current franchises expire. It is expected that the branding for both lines will remain the same as is currently to distinguish the different identities.

[edit] Bids

There were four bids for control of the franchise South Western bids:

  • Stagecoach as South Western
  • Arriva as Arriva Trains South West,
  • First as First South Western
  • Great South Western Railway (a consortium of Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation & National Express Group(NEG)). MTR's original partner was GNER who backed out in July 2006 to focus on a legal challenge involving a new competitor on the East Coast route, Grand Central Railway, and were replaced by NEG who had bidded themselves as Trafalgar trains until backing out in March 2006.

On 22 September 2006 the DfT Rail Group announced that the franchise had been awarded to Stagecoach. It will run for ten years and Stagecoach have agreed to pay the government a £1.9 billion premium [2].

Amongst other aspects of the franchise agreement Stagecoach will be required to install Oyster Pre Pay across the London suburban network.
