Saint Vincent is a volcanic island in the Caribbean, the largest part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It is located in the Caribbean Sea, between Saint Lucia and Grenada. It was disputed territory between France and the United Kingdom in the 18th century, but was ceded to the UK in 1783. It gained independence on October 27th, 1979. Kingstown (population 19,300) is the chief port of the island. The population of the entire island is about 110,000 people. The rest of the population resides in the other 5 main towns of Layou, Barrouallie, Chateaubelair, Georgetown and Calliaqua. It was also a filming location for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Most of the scenes were shot in Walliabou.

The highest mountain is the active volcano, La Soufrière, 1,234m (4,048 ft) high which erupted violently in 1812 and 1902. The latter eruption killed 1,680 people. The most recent eruption was on April 13th, 1979. On a "black friday".
