Stewart Avenue
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stewart Avenue is a four-lane, bi-directional road that runs north and south through the heart of Bethpage, New York. It stretches from Hempstead Turnpike to South Oyster Bay Road.
[edit] Businesses
The biggest businesses on Stewart Avenue are Cablevision (a Fortune 500 company), and King Kullen, which bills itself as "America's first supermarket." The King Kullen shopping center has stores such as Carvel, H&R Block, Subway, and North Fork Bank. Grumman used to operate its main headquarters from there, and in the 1960s, parts of the lunar module that landed on the moon were built there.
[edit] Schools
Bethpage High School is located on the corner of Stewart Avenue and Cherry Avenue. Half a mile north is Briarcliffe College. Briarcliffe specializes in digital photography, criminal justice, computer networking, information technology and visual communications.
The strip of Stewart Avenue near the high school is notorious for accidents. Several Bethpage students in the past five years alone have been killed, prompting the "Drive Safely" sign posted along the tennis courts facing the road.
