Sverdlovsk (Ukrainian: Свердловськ, translit. Sverdlovs’k, Russian: Свердловск) is a city in the Luhansk Oblast (province) of south-eastern Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Sverdlovsky Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast, and is located approximately 80km from the oblast capital, Luhansk.

The current estimated population is around 72,531 (as of 2001).

[edit] History

At the end of the 18th century, Catherine II of Russia granted ataman Vasyl Orlov a small farmland in the headstream of Dolzhyk River as a reward for his excellent military service. The farmland took on the name Dolzhykovo-Orlovske. The development of the surrounding village sped up towards the end of 19th century, after the discovery of coal in the Donetsk region. In 1938 the city received city status and its current name in the memory of the Bolshevik leader Yakov Sverdlov. Yekaterinburg, in the Russian Ural Mountains, was also renamed Sverdlovsk from 1924-1991.

In 1979, a secret anthrax production facility located near the city experienced a leak and nearly 100 residents of the city died from exposure to aerosol anthrax spores. (See Sverdlovsk anthrax leak)

Most of the city residents work in the mining industry.
