Tampico is a village located in Whiteside County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 772.

[edit] History

On February 6, 1911, former US President Ronald Reagan was born in a second story apartment situated over the local bank. The building where the apartment is located overlooks the main street (Illinois Highway 172). Reagan was born in the front bedroom of the apartment.

Tampico is the hometown of local legend Grant Wendland. Legend has it that Grant Wendland rid the town of its overwhelming stray cat population in the 1940's. To do so, he attached a mechanical device to a bike (one tire street ready, the other off-road ready) with a sound similar to that of a violent, rabid badger.

It was also the birthplace of Admiral Joseph M. Reeves.
