Teen pop
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Teen pop or Swedish pop is a form of popular music made for and often by preteens and teenagers, Max Martin and Jay Orpin are pioneers of this genre of music. It could be in a form of a garage band, rap music, or it could be music made for manufactured boy bands-girl groups/pop princess. Most teen pop in the 2000s has a late '90s alternative pop rock sound to it and it has a very light and dancy feel. It has always been around in one form or another, from the Phil Spector-produced Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans to the Bubblegum Pop of the Archies, but its popularity exploded in the late 80s (with acts like Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block, Tiffany and Martika) and late 90s (with bands and performers such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Spice Girls and *NSYNC). Female singers are usually referred to as a Pop princess. Teen pop bands are almost always made or prefabricated, not born, and admittedly so.
Some teen pop icons of today include Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Anne Hudgens. Hilary Duff has been the most successful among today's teen pop stars. However, Hannah Montana (album) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and remained there for 2 weeks. Duff's 3rd album, Most Wanted, is her only album to debut at number one. Critics say that Cyrus may overthrow Duff to take the throne of Pop Princess.
[edit] Popularity
Teen pop is generally very popular as seen from the high number of album sales.
Britney Spears has sold a total of 74 million albums worldwide. However, from her 3rd album In The Zone, she moved away from a teen pop image to a more sexual image. Her first 2 albums sold 52 million copies worldwide.
Another popular teen star, Hilary Duff, has sold a total of 13.5 million albums. She has not been able to sustain fans as album sales started to wane after her smashing debut, Metamorphosis, which went on to be the 8th best selling album in USA and 6th in the world.
Other rising stars like Hudgens have sold slightly more than 100,000 copies while the Hanna Montana album, which had many songs sung by Cyrus, has been certified gold.
