[edit] Yahoo!-China cooperation controversy

Semel has been criticized by some for his support of Yahoo!'s cooperation with Chinese officials in their attempts to suppress domestic dissent. Yahoo's actions resulted in blogger Shi Tao being sentenced to prison for 10 years.

In a widely publicized exchange at The Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital conference, Semel was asked if Yahoo! would have cooperated with Nazi Germany. In response, Semel, who is Jewish, stated, "I don’t know how I would have felt then."<ref>Yahoo Defends China Cooperation, The Wall Street Journal</ref>
