The story opens with Artemio Cruz awaiting death. Cruz discusses his past where he fights in the Mexican Revolution. During this time, Cruz is corrupted by the war and the horrific experiences that come with such events. Following the war, he marries and is poor for about a decade. But, then rapidly he becomes extremely wealthy. Seemingly, the lasting impact of the war continues to have an effect.
