A threesome is the term which describes a sexual act involving three people, sometimes also referred to as a ménage à trois.
The act has been referred to by some as being done by married couples who have reached a point in their marriage where both believe they need added excitement, commonly referred to as "spicing up the marriage". In most cases it is a one time act by a married couple with a third partner, and not intended to be carried on further, sometimes called "swinging". Also, this has been part of the evolution of polyamory relationships.
In the book Three In Love, the authors claim that three or more people is the "next big thing in relationships". The book discusses the advantages of having more than one sexual partner, emphasizing that it can meet the sexual and emotional needs of all those involved. It also indicates that each of the persons involved in the relationship must first overcome their jealousy, and must be willing to give equal time to each partner.
The book reviews certain relationships of famous personalities that have been known to become involved with more than one sexual partner, with all parties involved being aware, to include lesbian actress Greta Garbo, writer Ernest Hemingway, and D.H. Lawrence. It also places emphasis on the fact that for it to be successful, those involved much each have compassion, understanding, honesty, and certain knowledge of an erotic nature. <ref>{{cite web

Writer and pornographic actress Nina Hartley, while writing for Sexuality and culture Magazine, said that many people within society fail to realize the benefits of being involved sexually and emotionally with two different people at the same time. She goes further to say that historically, the strongest individual in a ménage à trois relationship is usually a woman, sharing two men, or one man and one woman. She indicates that, in her opinion, women can more easily control a situation of that sort, and that a woman can equally distribute herself sexually to more than one person, while at the same time having legitimate feelings for both. Hartley goes on to claim that relationships of this sort are very often more successful than traditional one-on-one relationships, and points out the large divorce rate among traditional marriages that are often due to infidelity.
