TimeSplitters 2 is a 2002 first-person shooter for Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. It was developed by Free Radical Design and published by Eidos. It is the sequel to 2000's TimeSplitters, which is also for the PlayStation 2. The game was released in Japan under the name "Time Splitter" (with no 'S' or 2) and the map editor function was notably dropped on the PS2 version. The game is notable for its immediate impact on gaming in 2002, where it ranked among the best first-person shooter games being sold.

[edit] Improvements over the original

Improvements to the original game include:

  • A more in-depth story mode with longer missions and varied primary and secondary objectives.
  • Checkpoints are in many missions.
  • The option to use a stealth strategy in some scenes.
  • Boss characters now appearing in some missions.
  • The co-operative mode expanded to better cater to two players.
  • The addition of an Arcade League mode (see below for details)
  • Distinct set statistics and difficulty ratings for individual characters (can be switched off in arcade custom mode).
  • The ability to create story-based maps in the Mapmaker.
  • Destructible environments.

[edit] Story

The story is based around an evil extra terrestrial race called the TimeSplitters who are bent on the destruction of the Earth. However, rather than invasion, the TimeSplitters are using time crystals to travel though time and change the course of the Earth’s history, thus bringing it into ruin. The game starts off in the year 2401, with Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart invading the TimeSplitters' space station in order to recover the 9 time crystals. They manage to make it to the bridge, however are too late as they manage to see the last few TimeSplitters jumping through a time portal, each carrying one time crystal. These nine TimeSplitters have each travelled to a different time period in the Earth’s history, and Cortez must travel to each of these times to recover the time crystals. Upon arrival at each time zone, he takes the form of a different character which relates to the that period in history: for example, in the Wild West he takes the form of the bounty hunter, Elijah Jones, and in Chicago he takes the form of the “hard-boiled detective,” Jake Fenton. Each level is extremely unique and has its own style of weapons, from the wild west rifle and gangster-style tommy gun to futuristic plasma rifles and homing launchers. The levels often end on a showdown with a boss or multiple bosses, and almost always on the recovery of a time crystal. New objectives are added on harder level settings and new sections to the levels are revealed. The story sees you return to the space station where you have to escape with the time crystals, thus restoring the integrity of Earth’s history.

[edit] Main items

  • Temporal Uplink: A useful gadget that serves mainly as a map to locate enemies, cameras and Time Crystal shards. It can also be used to play three mini games that can be found in the Story Mode. These games are Astro Lander, Retro Racer and Anaconda.
  • Time Crystal: Mysterious crystalline objects scattered throughout time whose retrieval is the primary objective of every mission. Strange occurrences and anomalies are often manifest in areas where a Time Crystal has been secreted.

[edit] Weapons

TimeSplitters 2 has a large selection of weaponry for players to use in their quests to restore history. As in the first game, the nature of weapons available to the player typically revolves around the time period currently being explored. Arcade matches can have weapons set as custom. Note that many weapons such as the Silenced Pistol and the Tommy Gun can be found in pairs. Some guns also have an alternate fire mode, used to perform a function other than their normal mode of fire, such as rapidly firing multiple shots or launching a grenade. The total number of weapons is 27.

[edit] Pistols and handguns

  • Luger Pistol: A semiautomatic pistol with a 7-round magazine. It is accurate and fast-firing, but individual shots are weak compared to other weapons.
  • Silenced Luger: A silenced version of the Luger Pistol. This weapon is only found in 1932 Chicago in Story Mode and the Hospital and Chinese Recommended weapon sets.
  • Silenced Pistol: A modern pistol with a permanently-attached silencer and an 8-round magazine. Apparently modeled after the Walther P99 pistol.
  • Garrett Revolver: Arguably the most powerful pistol in the game, but it fires slowly when compared to other handguns and can only hold 6 rounds in its cylinder. Apparently modeled after the Colt Single Action Army.
  • Sci-Fi Handgun: A futuristic handgun that holds 30 plasma cells per magazine, but fires ricocheting 3-round bursts for each pull of the trigger.

With the exception of the Sci-Fi Handgun, players can hold two of the same handgun, one in each hand, doubling the firepower.

[edit] Rifles

  • Sniper Rifle: A long-range rifle with a powerful scope. While it is useful at long range, the slow rate of fire and small, 5-round magazine make this weapon ineffective in close quarters. Modeled after the Walther WA 2000.
  • Vintage Rifle: The past version of the Sniper Rifle. Other than appearance and noise, the Vintage Rifle is essentially the same as the Sniper Rifle. Modeled after the Winchester rifle.
  • Lasergun: An energy based semiautomatic rifle. The Lasergun normally fires rapid, weak shots, but it can be charged up for a more powerful shot with damage comparable to a shotgun. It does not need reloading, instead drawing power from a battery. Alternate fire activates an energy shield which continually saps battery power but can block bullets, crossbow bolts, and plasma shots.

[edit] Shotguns

  • Shotgun: A sawed-off, double-barreled shotgun. The small magazine size requires frequent reloading, but shot-for-shot, it is one of the most powerful weapons in the game. Two can be held and used simultaneously in a similar fashion to the pistols.
  • Tactical 12-Gauge: A pump-action assault shotgun. It can fire 8 shells before needing to be reloaded. It is very effective against zombies. In alternate fire mode, it fires two rapid shots, ejecting both shells soon afterwards with a single pump. Unlike the double-barreled shotgun, the Tactical 12-Gauge cannot be dual-wielded. Unlike other weapons, shells are reloaded one at a time. Appears to be modeled after the Benelli M4 Super 90.

[edit] Automatics

  • Tommy Gun: An old-fashioned submachine gun with a fast rate of fire and a 32-round drum magazine. It can be dual-wielded.
  • Soviet S47: An assault rifle with a 30-round magazine and a grenade launcher attachment. Alternate fire launches a grenade from the launcher. It can be dual-wielded. Modeled after the AK-47 assault rifle.
  • SBP90 machinegun: A near-future submachine gun with a 64-round magazine and a low-powered scope. Like the Tommy Gun and Soviet S47, it can be dual-wielded. Modeled after the FN P90.
  • Plasma Autorifle: A futuristic energy rifle. It does not need to be reloaded, having a maximum capacity of 200 rounds, but it can overheat, which renders the weapon unusable until it cools down. Alternate fire launches a plasma grenade which sticks to any surface, including enemies and other players.
  • Minigun: A large, rotary-barreled minigun with the fastest rate of fire in the game. It requires no reloading and can hold up to 400 rounds, but it can overheat if fired for too long, resulting in a dramatically lowered rate of fire. Primary fire causes the barrels to spin, and the gun fires once the barrels are spinning at a sufficient rate. Alternate fire causes the barrels to constantly spin, but it causes the minigun to overheat faster.

[edit] Handheld explosives

  • TNT: A crude explosive device that can be used as a makeshift mine. The player may only carry one TNT pack at a time.
  • Timed mines: A mine that explodes after a set time. Alternate fire lengthens the timer.
  • Proximity mines: A mine that discharges once it detects motion within the area it's been planted.
  • Remote mines: A mine that is activated manually. Alternate fire detonates the mine. The mines can be attached to the ground, walls , and even other players/enemies.

[edit] Projectile explosives

  • Grenade launcher: An 8-round revolving grenade launcher. Alternate fire launches an incendiary grenade.
  • Rocket launcher: A 3-shot rocket launcher. Alternate fire discharges all 3 rockets at once.
  • Homing launcher: A futuristic rocket launcher that can lock on and home in on enemies. Alternate fire launches 3 missiles at once.

[edit] Other weapons

  • Flamethrower: A close-range weapon that sets the target on fire. Robots cannot be set on fire.
  • Crossbow: A primitive weapon with a 4-round magazine. The bolts can be lit on fire by torches for extra damage.
  • Fire extinguisher: A non-lethal item used to put out fires. It can counter the effects of a flamethrower. The players can extinguish bots by spraying them, or extinguish themselves by pointing the nozel at the ground, firing, and walking forwards at the same time.
  • Brick: A thrown weapon. Alternate fire throws the brick somewhat farther. Bricks are difficult to use and have a short range, and as a result, they are considered a very embarrassing way to die from.
  • ElectroTool: A futuristic tool that emits a constant beam of electrical energy. It can destroy plasma storage banks and energy barriers as well as being used as a lethal weapon. Robots are more vulnerable to the ElectroTool than organic beings.

[edit] Arcade

A major reason for TimeSplitters 2's critical acclaim was the multiplayer Arcade Mode. Once unlocked, there are 14 individual game types, all with multiple options (one shot kills, radars etc) and well over 100 characters to play as. The game types themselves are:

  • Deathmatch: Every man for himself. The player with the most kills at the end of the game wins.
  • Team Deathmatch: A Deathmatch with players divided into teams. The team with the most kills at the end of the set time or the first team to reach the specified amount of kills wins.
  • Capture the Bag: Two teams attempt to take the opposing teams' bag back to their base. The team with the most bag-captures or the first to reach a specified amount of bag-captures wins.
  • Bag Tag: There is a bag placed at a single point on the map. The player who holds possession of the bag for the longest time wins.
  • Elimination: A Deathmatch in which each player has a limited number of lives. The last player standing wins.
  • Shrink: A modified Deathmatch. Players with a lower ranking shrink in size, making them a harder target.
  • Virus: One player starts the match with a non-damaging green fire and tries to spread the fire to as many people as they can. The last player standing wins. Any weapons that start or put out fires are not allowed in Virus mode.
  • Flame Tag: Can be described as Bag Tag in reverse. The objective is to avoid the person on fire. The player who spent the smallest amount of time on fire wins. Only one person can be on fire at a time. Any weapons that start or put out fires are not allowed in Flame Tag mode.
  • Vampire: A modified Deathmatch. Your character has a "Bloodlust" meter, which can only be replenished by killing other players. If the Bloodlust meter runs empty, your character dies.
  • Leech: A modified Deathmatch. Shooting other players returns health to the attacker.
  • Regeneration: A modified Deathmatch. Players' health regenerates at a slow rate.
  • Thief: Kills do not count in this mode, but players drop special coins when killed, which must be collected. The player who collects the most coins wins.
  • Gladiator: One player starts as the Gladiator, and only the Gladiator can get points for kills. Any normal player that kills the Gladiator becomes the Gladiator themselves.
  • Zones: A series of zones are scattered around the map. Capturing zones gives the capturing team points. The team that scores the most points by capturing zones wins.
  • Assault: The Red Team is tasked with completing certain objectives within a map, and the Blue Team must stop the Red Team from completing their objectives.
  • Monkey Assistant: A modified Deathmatch. The player in last place has monkeys help him by attacking the player in first place.

[edit] Arcade league

The Arcade League allows the player to set their wits against a series of pre-set multiplayer matches. There are 3 leagues with 5 groups of 3 matches in each. Successful completion of a match will result in a trophy, coloured bronze, silver or gold depending on the criteria met. A silver and/or gold trophy is usually accompanied with new characters, arcade maps or cheats. In addition, a platinum trophy can also be earned for an outstanding performance in a match, but results in no additional reward. Each group is typically linked by a common theme. Any group can be selected from the start, but you must complete each match within a group to unlock the next in that group. At the beginning of the game, you will have access to only the Amateur League; completion of Amateur League matches will unlock the Honorary League, which in turn unlocks the Elite League when completed.

Again, the challenges are found in groups of three, typically linked by a common theme. Completion of challenges unlocks the next group and so forth. Characters weapons, and maps can be rewarded for good performance as well. Gold trophies are needed to unlock the maximum charcters for that specific mission.

[edit] Trivia

  • The game is featured in the 2004 "romzomcom" Shaun of the Dead as the game of choice for characters Shaun and Ed. The section that can be seen is the multiplayer 'Streets' arena, and Single Player map, Chicago. In the film, other players can join the game simply by pressing Start during a match; while this feature is included in some games, TimeSplitters 2 is not one of them, and the "Player two has entered the game" soundbites had to be voiced by Peter Serafinowicz. Returning the favour, with a nod back to Shaun of the Dead, the character Clip Clamp in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect says "Do I have red on me?" when selected. This parodies a line repeated throughout the movie "You've got red on you."
  • The Russian dam setting of the opening level is reminiscent of the first mission of GoldenEye 007, a game on which many of the TimeSplitters development team previously worked.
  • The level "2019 Neo-Tokyo" is an homage to the cyberpunk anime Akira, which takes place in the same exact city and date. Akira pays great debt to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner as they both bear strong similarities in technology, music, and setting.
  • The level "Wild West" is inconsistent with American history when it says that the colonel is a confederate, because the level takes place in 1853. It wasn't until 1861 that the Confederacy was created and the American Civil War began. Also, a flag is shown with twenty stars, implying twenty states; there were thirty-one in 1853. (This can easily be explained as an alternate reality, since it is a video game and not attempting to be historically accurate in any way, shape, or form.)
  • The Atomsmasher level resembles the original "Half-Life", It has similar gameplay and has many references.
  • TimeSplitters also features ingame games which are old school arcade such as Anaconda (like Snake (video game)) Moon-Lander and RetroRacer. You must find them on the levels(on the right difficulty setting) and once you have the cart you can open them with the Terminal uplink.
