This is a timeline of French history.

  • 1610: King Henri IV dies (possibly at the hands of his Florentine wife Maria d'Medici), and the French government takes a pro-Habsburg (ie, Catholic Holy Roman Empire of Austria and Spain) orientation under Maria's control.
  • 1617: 16-year old King Louis XIII exiles his mother, and takes control of the government.
  • 1624: King Louis XIII takes as his chief minister Cardinal Richilieu, who blocks the Habsburg-Papal effort to create a "universal monarchy", the fruit of his efforts being formalized 10 years after his death in the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia ending the Thirty Years' War.
