Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (特捜戦隊デカレンジャー Tokusō Sentai Dekarenjā?), translated into English as Special Investigation Squadron Dekaranger, was the 2004 Super Sentai Japanese TV series. Deka is Japanese colloquial slang for "detective" and has no direct translation, but is sometimes written over the kanji for "Keiji" (a more formal term for detective); it is also a Greek prefix "deca", meaning "ten", and a total of ten Dekarangers appear in the series and movie combined. The footage from the show was used to create the American series Power Rangers: S.P.D.. This series was dubbed into Korean as Power Rangers: SPD (파워레인저SPD) in South Korea.

[edit] Plot

"SPD… Special Police Dekaranger. Five detectives: Burning Hearts, Fighting Cool. Their mission is to fight cosmic criminals who have invaded the Earth and to protect the peace and safety of the people!"

The story begins when Banban Akaza arrives on Earth. He is transferred to the S.P.D. (Special Police DekaRanger) Earth branch by his commander. By that time, Agent Abrella, an Alienizer arms dealer, turns his destructive attention to Earth, helping the criminals there. It's up to the DekaRangers to stop them and bring them to justice. The SPD of Earth are stationed in the DekaBase under the command of Doggy Kruger.

[edit] Characters

Special Police Dekaranger, or S.P.D., has advanced extraterrestrial technology at its disposal, giving its officers armor made out of DekaMetal, and making them Dekarangers.

[edit] Others

  • Hikaru (7-8): A young alien ESPer with the ability to teleport inanimated objects. Originally a street wanderer, he hated humans because they mistreated him due to his powers, and wanted to leave the planet as soon as possible. This was taken in advantage by an Alienizer named Dagonail, who used him for his crimes. However, Jasmine managed to convince him to trust in her, and after Dagonail's defeat, Hikaru left the planet to join the SPD training academy.
  • Flora (15-16): A cyborg designed after a young woman, her original purpose was serving as the brain of a monster called Gigas, as her creator Meteus wanted. However, she met Sen and befriended him. During the time being, Sen helped her to develop her human heart, so she could be more than a machine. She was later captured by Meteus, but saved by Dekamaster, who killed Meteus. Flora was accepted as human and joined an SPD base in another planet.
  • Amy (12): Amy is a huge baby who was thought to be lost but was really kidnapped by the Alienizer. Her cries are create shockwaves capable of destroying cities. Also, her species are actually giant creatures; however, use devices to shrink themselves when traveling. In this case, her pacifier was her shrinking device and when she accidentally drops it, she grows into a giant. Umeko sung her a lulluby to her to calm her down.
  • Beetonin (18): An Alien from Planet Zoina who crashed landed in Kyoto in the Feudal Era Japan. He was cared for by Ban's ancestor and shinsengumi member, Akaza Banoshin, who taught him the ways of bushido and samurai conduct. In addition, taught him his "Raijin Ken" (Thunder God Sword) technqiue. Beetonin ended up in present-day Kyoto, confused by the changes and attacking the DekaRangers on assumption that they were invaders thanks to Abrella. In reality, his species ages slower than humans; according to Jasmine, a 60,000 year difference. Fortunately, Ban defeated him with Doggy's D-Sword Vega and Beetonin realized the truth. His name is an anagram of the name "Inazo Nitobe".
  • Yaako (38): An Alien from Falufa who's parents were killed by Ganjava and then raised by him believing him to be an adopted father. She was used by him for robberies until she wanted to stop. She went to SPD under Ban's protection. Ganjava lended them a booby trapped bike with a bomb and Ban had to keep a certain speed, weight, and elevation or the bomb would go off. Ban decided to ride the bike off a cliff in order to save Yaako. However, because of Ban's faith in her, Yaako evolved into a beautiful adult and rescued him. By the end, she serves as an SPD advisor. She and Ban have a brother/sister relationship as Ban would call her a "piglet" due to her young form, which was a little alien with a pig snout.
  • Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger: 2003 Sentai hero team. Appeared in Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger VS Abaranger. At first the main 3 members, Ryouga/AbaRed, Sanjou/AbareBlue and Ranru/AbareYellow, were arrested for attacking the metropolis. Soon after, the Dekaranger team learned that the Abaranger were actually hunting down a mysterious Alienizer known as Kazaku, who was planning to resurrect the evil Evorian god Dezumorlya. After facing revived (and strangely speechless) Alienizers, Asuka/AbareBlack traveled from Dino-Earth to join the rest of the team. Kazaku failed to resurrect Dezumorlya, instead resurrecting Mikoto/AbareKiller and his Blastasaur, TopGaler, as well. After successfully defeating all of the Alienizer's and the Evolian "SaunaEelGinko", AbareKiller left for the afterlife again, and the rest of the team celebrated their victory before parting ways.
  • Mahou Sentai Magiranger: Met up in Mahou Sentai Magiranger VS Dekaranger, starting from when an Alienizer attacked the restaurant Umeko and the Ozu siblings (and Hikaru) were in on Fantastic Happy Day. Ban also returns from the Fire Squad to delete an Alienizer that formerly worked with Infershia. When Urara (MagiBlue) and Jasmine both get captured, the two teams work together to put a stop to the Alienizer and to prevent them from taking the Flower of Heaven that was entrusted to the Ozu siblings' mother. Unfortunately, Ban and Kai (MagiRed) don't get along at first. The Dekaranger learn from the Ozu siblings and Hikaru about the meaning of family.

[edit] Space Criminals Alienizer

Space Criminals Alienizer (宇宙犯罪者アリエナイザー Uchū Hanzaisha Arienaizā) is the generic name given to aliens that commit various forms of crime, on Earth and on other planets.

[edit] Names/Puns

[edit] DekaRangers

  • Ban's. surname, "Akaza", is a pun on the name of an English crime fiction writer, "Agatha Christie", while it makes him the 3rd person with the kanji for his color ("Aka") in his surname. His first name is a pun on "Ban-cha", Japanese coarse gren tea. It could also be seen as a play on "ban ban," the Japanese equivalent of "bang bang," which would fit with Ban's dual-gun fighting style.
  • Hoji's surname, "Tomasu", is a pun on the name of an American novelist, "Thomas Harris". His first name is a pun on "Houji-cha", Japanese roasted green tea.
  • Sen-chan's surname, "Inari", is a pun on the pseudonym of American detective fiction writers, "Ellery Queen". His first name is a pun on "Sen-cha", Japanese green tea.
  • Jasmine's surname "Reimon" is a pun on the name of an American crime fiction writer, "Raymond Chandler". Her nickname is a pun on jasmine tea.
  • Umeko's surname,"Kodou", is from the name of a Japanese author, "Kodou Nomura", who is known as the author of Japanese TV series "Zenigata Heiji". Her first name is a pun on "umekombucha", a tea like drink made from ume and kombu.
  • Tetsu's surname, "Aira", is a pun on the name of an American novelist, "Ira Levin". His first name contains kanji which is a pun on a traditional Chinese tea (铁观音)"Tie-guan-yin".
  • Doggy Kruger is named after the star Kruger 60, one of the nearest stars, in the same fashion his sword Vega is named after the star Vega. Kruger could also derive from the fictional serial killer, Freddy Krueger.
  • Swan's surname, Shiratori, is translated as "White Bird". Swans are commonly white feather colored.
  • K-9 Unit 'Murphy's name is a double-pun: K-9 is a pun on canine, and Murphy is the name of the hero "Alex Murphy", who appears in "RoboCop".

[edit] Alienizers

  • Abrella's name a pun on umbrella. In Japan, a black umbrella is compared to a bat and is often called "Koumori-Gasa (bat-umbrella)".
  • Ben G is a pun on Benji.
  • Meteus is a pun on Mateus.

[edit] Trivia

  • Unlike other sentai series, Dekaranger did not have a singular evil orginazation bent on ruling/destroying the Earth, and thus appears to lack a strong overarching plot (Mahou Sentai Magiranger can be seen as the polar opposite of this). The only linking bond between all of the "Monsters of the Week" were that they went to the same arms dealer: Agent Abrella.
  • From October 2003-January 15, 2004, a slow song was leaked onto the Internet in which was to be either the ED or OP to this series. 2 months into the Dekaranger series, the song turned out to be the Psychic Lover's demo to Dekaranger Action.
  • The first Super Sentai to have more than six members (CarRanger, however, had five authentic CarRangers, and Radietta Fanbelt (the good-hearted younger sister of villainess Zonette) who acted as a sixth CarRanger called "White Racer", VRV Master, and the three members of the Signalman family, making it the first Sentai with more than six warriors).
  • Dekaranger is not only the series with most heroes and most heroines: it is also the Tokusatsu series with the most romantic relationships between comrades (Ban & Marie, Sen & Umeko, and Doggy & Swan). The remaining Dekarangers are victims of massive fanshipping, where Hoji is paired with Jasmine, and Tetsu with his mentor Lisa. However, in the team up with Magiranger, it was hinted that Tetsu has shown some kind of feelings towards Jasmine. Many assumed that Hoji and Jasmine were a couple based on the history of being the first two Earth Dekarangers; however, Hoji keeps his relationship with Jasmine on a professional level.
  • Dekaranger is the first Sentai series to have a base-robo that transforms without the other ranger's mecha, as well as a combined robot transforming into a weapon.
  • The Hell's Siblings are very similar to the three Fallen Angel warriors from Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGo-V, both groups are siblings comprised of three members, both Jiin and Succubus are the youngest and are both female. Guuru and Bon Goblin are the middle children and are both hulking, green-skinned beasts, and both Zoodo and Blitz are the oldest and both use swords.
  • Deka is a slang term meaning "detective". Deka can also be translated as Deca—a prefix which means "ten"—since there are ten DekaRangers in all.
  • Dekaranger is the first team to lack a team leader. Although Ban can be considered the de jure leader and Umeko claims the leadership for herself, it has been stated in-show that the team works well without one, and that all members of the team are equal in terms of authority. It can also be mistaken that, as the commanding officer of the group, Doggy is the team leader of the group, but he in fact functions more as a mentor and rarely joins the team on the field as Dekamaster.
  • The voice actors (Seiyū) Ryusei Nakao(Agent Abrella) and Tetsu Inada(Doggy Kruger/Dekamaster), both lend their voices in the anime series, Bleach.
  • The ending theme "girls in trouble! DEKARANGER" is an oddity in the Sentai history. Instead of being played regularly taking over its predecessor, it was played only when Jasmine and/or Umeko were/was the episode focus, starting with Episode 17. A version with altered lyrics was also used for the movie, it was called "The Movie Version! DEKARANGER" and it was performed by the six main Dekarangers.
  • The ending theme "Midnight Dekaranger" was a "contemporary" take on 1920s and 1930s jazz-style songs with the Dekarangers dancing, and an alien band playing in the background.
  • "Midnight Dekaranger" , along with the insert song "Dekamaster , Never Stop!" marked the first new tokusatsu songs to be sung by Isao Sasaki since he sang the opening theme to the 1987 Metal Hero series Choujinki Metalder, "Kimi no Seishun Wa Kagayaiteiru Ka". However, this is not the first time that he did songs in the Super Sentai franchise. His first songs were in Himitsu Sentai Goranger, followed by J.A.K.Q. Dengeki Tai.
  • In Episode 32, Jasmine says "SUATTO Sanjou, SUATTO Kaiketsu" ["Arriving with a "SWAT", solving problems with a "SWAT"] when looking at images of the S.W.A.T mode armor. This is a nod towards the famous tokusatsu series Kaiketsu Zubatto, in which main hero Zubatto's classic catchphrase was "ZUBATTO Sanjou, ZUBATTO Kaiketsu" ["Arriving with a 'ZUBAT' , solving problems with a 'ZUBAT'"]
  • Each Dekaranger episode has an "English" title.
  • The scene when Dekabreak slows down time to catch the bullets is an homage to The Matrix Reloaded, where Neo performs the same trick as Dekabreak but instead of catching the bullets, he stops them with his hand.
  • This was the second sentai series to use a closing remark scene before the vocals for the ending theme began. The tradition began one year earlier with Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger.
  • A special joke within Dekaranger vs. Abaranger is that other than transforming into Chief Numa-O to get Ban to let down his guard and injure him, Kazakuu also briefly transformed into Hurricane Red from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger to get Ryouga/Abared and the other Abarangers to let down their guard and injure them as well (as the Abarangers had previously met Yousuke/Hurricane Red in Abaranger vs. Hurricanger).
  • Exists one surprises comparison of Dekaranger with Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGo-V in Mechas. The comparison is the following one:
    • Dekaranger Robo - Victory Robo
    • DekaBase Robo - GrandLiner
    • DekaBike Robo - LinerBoy
    • Super Dekaranger Robo - Max Victory Robo
    • DekaWing Robo - Victory Mars
  • There was a goof in Magiranger vs. Dekaranger: Ban was wearing his Earth Dekaranger uniform, instead of his Fire Squad uniform.
  • Two of the Dekarangers make an anime cameo in an episode of the anime series, Gravion Zwei. In one scene in a crowd, Ban is seen on the left of the screen. After another two screen shots, Umeko appears with a maid type version of her Deka Uniform.
  • The white gloves in the Dekaranger suits resemble the gloves worn by normal Japanese traffic officers.
  • The signature catchphrase when the Dekaranger are about to delete an Alienizer is "Strike Out!" which is a reference to the Three strikes law enforced in the United States. After the Alienizer is deleted, the Dekaranger say "Got you!", which is followed by a thumb down hand gesture. The hand gesture is a reference to the stereotypical accounts of Roman courts declaring a prisoner's sentence of life or death with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down gesture, respectively.
