Treno Alta Velocità SpA is special purpose entity owned by RFI for planning and construction of high-speed rail lines along Italy's most important and saturated transport routes. These lines are often referred as TAV lines.

Eurostar Italia is a system of quality trains operated by Trenitalia on the routes connecting the main Italian cities and towns. Several types of high-speed trains belonging to two major families carry out the service:

In 2008 a new class of Pendolino (ETR 600, or Superpendolino, built by Alstom) will be introduced on TAV lines.

Milan to Naples:

  1. Milan - Bologna (construction started 2000, opening 2007)
  2. Bologna - Florence (construction started 1996, opening 2008)
  3. Rome - Florence "Direttissima", the first TAV line (construction started 1970, first stage opened 1978, finally opened in 1991)
  4. Rome - Naples (construction started 1994, opened December 2005; Naples side last 20 km are still under construction)

Milan to Genoa:

  1. Milan - Genoa (construction start planned for 2006)

Turin to Trieste:

  1. Turin - Milan (Turin - Novara: construction started 2002, opened 10 February 2006; Novara-Milan: construction started 2002, opening 2009)
  2. Milan - Verona (construction start planned for 2006)
  3. Verona - Venice (Padua - Mestre: construction started ?, opening ?; Verona - Padua: construction start planned for 200?)
  4. Venice - Trieste

  1. Lyon Turin Ferroviaire (Lyon - Chambéry - Turin), which would connect the French TGV network to the Italian TAV network
  2. Milan - Swiss border, which would connect Italian TAV network to Switzerland and Germany through Swiss project AlpTransit (Gotthard Base Tunnel and Lötschberg Base Tunnel)
  3. Brenner Basistunnel (Verona - Innsbruck - Munich), for link with German and Austrian networks
  4. Trieste - Slovenian border - Ljubljana
