The tricep reflex tests the patency of the sensory and motor neurone pathways within the C7 & C8 spinal nerves. An absent reflex indicates a lower motor neuron lesion, a hyper-reflexive response indicates an upper motor neuron lesion. This response pattern is true to all deep tendon reflex's: achilles, patellar, bicep, and supinator.
