The Chinese Type 56 military rifle is a copy of the AK-47 Kalashnikov. The rifle exists in three variants; Type 56 (with fixed stock), Type 56-1 (with under-folding stock) and Type 56-2 (sideways folding stock). This series of rifles is most easily identified by the folding "spike" bayonet attached to the barrel just aft of the muzzle. The "Type 56" designation is also attached to the Chinese version of the SKS, known as the Type 56 carbine, but the designs are entirely distinct.

[edit] Chinese Type 56 variants
From left to right, the Type 56 variants are: Type 56-1, Type 56, and another Type 56. See this site for an image of a Type 56-1. The Chinese Type 56 Assault Rifles are somewhat of lower quality than other AK-47 variants — it is a myth that all countries made AK-47's to the same standards — they did not, East Germany and Russia made the most reliable variants. A variant chambered in 5.56mm was also produced for the export market.
