Typical owls (family Strigidae) are one of the two generally accepted families of owls, the other being the barn owls (family Tytonidae).
The nearly 200 species are assigned to a number of genera, which are in taxonomic order:
- Otus: scops owls, some 65 species
- Palau Owl, Pyrroglaux podarginus
- Cuban Screech Owl, Gymnoglaux lawrencii
- Ptilopsis: white-faced owls, 2 species
- Mindanao Eagle Owl, Mimizuku gurneyi
- Bubo: horned owls and eagle owls; includes former genera Nyctea and Ketupa, some two dozen species
- Scotopelia: earless fishing owls, 3 species
- Strix: earless owls, some 15 species
- Ciccaba, 4 species
- Crested Owl, Lophostrix cristata
- Maned Owl, Jubula lettii
- Pulsatrix: spectacled owls, 3 species
- Northern Hawk Owl, Surnia ulula
- Glaucidium: pygmy owls, about 30-35 species
- Long-whiskered Owlet, Xenoglaux loweryi
- Elf Owl, Micrathene whitneyi
- Athene, 2-4 species (depending on whether or not genus is split)
- Aegolius: saw-whet owls, 4 species
- Ninox: Australasian hawk-owls, some 20 species
- Papuan Hawk Owl, Uroglaux dimorpha
- Pseudoscops, 1-2 species
- Asio: eared owls, 6-7 species
- Fearful Owl, Nesasio solomonensis
- Mascarenotus: Mascarene owls, 3 species (extinct)
- Laughing Owl, Sceloglaux albifacies (extinct)
