The USS Voyager is a fictional starship in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager, the Intrepid class starship (NCC-74656) is a 24th century Starfleet vessel under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Voyager was designed by Star Trek: Voyager production designer Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach. Most of the ship's on-screen appearances result from computer-generated imagery, although Tony Meinenger built a model used in the series.

[edit] Mission

Voyager is launched in 2371 with a crew of 141 on a mission to track down a Maquis ship in "the Badlands." An alien force transports both Voyager and the Maquis vessel 70,000 light-years to the Delta Quadrant, damaging Voyager and killing several crewmembers. In order to prevent a genocide of the Ocampans, Janeway orders the destruction of a device that could transport Voyager and the Maquis vessel home. Stranded, and with the Maquis ship also destroyed, both crews must integrate and work together for the anticipated 75-year journey home.<ref name="Caretaker">"Caretaker." Star Trek: Voyager. </ref>

Starfleet Command eventually becomes aware of the ship's presence in the Delta Quadrant.<ref name="Message in a Bottle">"Message in a Bottle." Within the non-canon Star Trek: Voyager relaunch series, Chakotay is promoted to captain and receives command of Voyager.

[edit] Design and capabilities

The 700,000-metric ton Voyager was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, and launched from Earth Station McKinley.<ref name="Relativity" />

Voyager is equipped with bio-neural gel packs, designed to increase processing speed and better organize processed information, that supplement the ship's isolinear optical chips.<ref name="Caretaker" /> The ship also has two holodecks.<ref name="The Killing Game">"The Killing Game." Star Trek: Voyager. </ref> Voyager was the first ship to be equipped with a class-9 warp drive, which they were intended to test in deep space, allowing for a maximum attainable speed of Warp 9.975 for 36 hours.<ref name="Relativity" />

Voyager includes an Emergency Medical Hologram programmed with a library of over 5 million different medical treatments from 2,000 medical references and 47 physicians[citation needed]. The hologram itself is generated by a series of holographic emitters installed in sickbay.<ref name="Caretaker" /> Voyager's EMH is able to leave sickbay thanks to a piece of 29th century technology.<ref name="Future's End">"Future's End." The ship is initially equipped with four tri-cobalt devices, all of which are used to destroy the Caretaker's array.<ref name="Caretaker" /> An alternate future Kathryn Janeway equips the ship with transphasic torpedoes and ablative armor.<ref name="Endgame" />

During their years in the Delta Quadrant, the ship's crew upgrade Voyager with captured, stolen, and purchased technology[citation needed], as well as technology acquired from the future.<ref name="Endgame" /> Voyager's cargo bay is eventually equipped with several Borg alcoves.<ref name="Scorpion">"Scorpion."
