A United Nations Security Council Resolution is voted on by the fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council, the most powerful organ of the United Nations. It is passed if nine or more members vote for the resolution, and if it is not vetoed by any of the five permanent members. These members are the People's Republic of China, which replaced the Republic of China in 1971, France, the Russian Federation, which replaced the Soviet Union in 1991, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

There have been two major wars authorized by the Security Council; the 1950 Korean War, and the 1991 Gulf War.

The United Nations Charter contains numerous formulations which imply the adoption of resolution while not defining it any further.

Resolution 242 in 1967: Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area

Resolution 338 in 1973: calls for a ceasefire in the Yom Kippur War and for implementation of Resolution 242.

Resolution 446 in 1979, speaks against the Israeli settlements of occupied areas in the Six Day War.

Resolution 660 in 1990: Call on Iraq to withdraw immediately and unconditionally all forces from Kuwait.

Resolution 678 in 1990: Authorizes member states to use all necessary means to uphold and implement resolution 660 and all subsequent relevant resolutions and to restore international peace and security in the area [Kuwait].

Resolution 687 in 1991: Decides that Iraq shall unconditionally accept the destruction [...] of [a]ll chemical and biological weapons [...] and all [...] ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150 kilometres.

Resolution 1284: December 1999, modified sanctions on Iraq to allow food and medicine.

Resolution 1325 October 2000 Specifically addressed the impact of war on women, and women's contributions to conflict resolution and sustainable peace.

Resolution 1386, 22 December 2001: establishes for 6 months of an International Security Assistance Force to assist the Afghan Interim Authority in the maintenance of security in Kabul and its surrounding areas...Calls upon Member States to contribute personnel, equipment and other resources to the International Security Assistance Force. Resolution 1441 in 2002: Calls on Iraq to disclose its entire arsenal of weapons of mass destruction and medium and long-range missiles.

Resolution 1483 on 22 May 2003: Gave the USA, and its allies, occupying Iraq, limited authority to spend Iraqi resources, on behalf of the Iraqi people.
Resolution 1546 in 2004: Endorses the beginning of Iraq’s transition to a democratically elected government, the end of the occupation, and the assumption of full responsibility and authority by a fully sovereign and independent Interim Government of Iraq by 30 June 2004.

Resolution 1559 on 2 September 2004: calls on Syria to cease intervening in Lebanese internal politics, withdraw from Lebanon, and for the disbanding of all Lebanese militias.
