New Jersey's 4th Congressional District is currently represented by Republican Chris Smith. Smith is being challenged by Democrat Carol Gay in the November general election.

Smith refused to be interviewed for the Better Know A District segment of the Colbert Report; his Democratic challenger, Carol Gay, took up the offer instead, and appeared on the episode which first aired on October 12, 2006, and highlighted the district and the candidate.
