The University of Hamburg was founded on the 1 April 1919 by Wilhelm Stern and others. The University grew out of the previous "Allgemeinen Vorlesungswesen" and the "Kolonialinstitut" (Colonial Institute) as well as the "Akademischen Gymnasium".
