Urolagnia (also known as urophilia or undinism) is a sexual fetish with a focus on urine and urination.

People with urolagnia often like to urinate in public, or urinate on, or be urinated on by other people, and may drink the urine. The consumption of urine is urophagia. Some like to watch others doing these things. These activities are often described by the euphemisms "golden showers" or "watersports" (which should not be confused with water sports).

As a paraphilia, urine may be consumed or the person may bathe in it. Other variations include arousal from wetting or seeing someone else urinate in their pants or underclothes, or wetting the bed. Other forms of urolagnia may involve a tendency to be sexually aroused by smelling urine soaked clothing or body parts. In many cases, a strong correlation or conditioning arises between urine smell or sight and the sexual act. For some individuals the phenomenon may include a diaper fetish and/or arousal from infantilism. Watersports may also be used in a BDSM scene as a form of humiliation, sometimes involving desperation until incontinence or infantilization, sometimes physical humiliation associated with being urinated on or pressured to consume urine. In some cases, a person is aroused by merely staging situations where others can either witness that person wet his or her clothing or smell his or her urine scent.

Urolagnia is sometimes associated with, or confused with, arousal from having a full bladder or a sexual attraction to someone else experiencing the discomfort or pain of a full bladder, a sadomasochistic inclination.

[edit] Some common variations of urolagnia [citations needed]

Desperation - The act of holding one's own urine until the need to urinate is urgent, making another hold in their urine, or watching another person with a urgent need to urinate. This fetish sometimes originates from childhood memories of being or of seeing another needing the restroom. Arousal may be triggered by seeing the body movements or facial expressions of that person. It can also be heightened by the person saying that they have to urinate. The arousal from being desperate comes from the sensation of having a full bladder.

Voyeurism - Seeing another urinate without the person's knowledge either through video taping by a hidden camera, or by lurking in locations where people are urinating or are likely to have an urge to urinate.

Clothes wetting - The person is sexually aroused by wetting one's clothing or observing another person doing so. Usually that person prefers to stage the wetting so that his or her legs (or other body parts) become soaked with urine. The warm sensation felt when urine trickles on the body seems to be the key factor for pleasurable feelings. In many cases, that person is also aroused by smelling body parts that have a urine scent. Others get aroused by telling some people about when they lost control and wet themselves. Some prefer a particular type of clothing to urinate in.

Exhibitionism – Becoming noticeably desperate or wetting oneself with the express purpose of being seen by strangers. Practitioners have described going to public places such as a mall or a park. Some intend to create situations where others can see their wet clothing.

[edit] Other practices

Some people drink large quantities of their own urine as alternative medicine. This is not the same as urolagnia. Some believe that some or all urine therapists may be urolagniacly motivated, as a sort of apologism or promotion of the fetish, whether the connection or even the fetish itself is consciously realized[citation needed]. Similarly, urolagnia may be formed based upon appreciation for the perceived health benefits of urine therapy, as may happen with other health-related obsessions[citation needed].

[edit] Notable urophiliacs

  • Havelock Ellis - British sexologist who was impotent until at age sixty he discovered that he was aroused by the sight of a woman urinating. Ellis is also notable for his attempt to prove that the painter Rembrandt also enjoyed the practice, claiming that it explained the golden tones in which paintings were suffused, and arguing that Rembrandt's picture "Bathsheba" originally depicted her urinating.
  • Ricky Martin - Puerto Rican Singer. Gave an interview with Blender Magazine in which he stated that he enjoyed "Golden Showers"<ref>report of Blender Magazine story</ref>.
  • Shirley Manson - Lead singer of the popular rock band Garbage. Was quoted in an interview as saying "I hate boys who are frightened of pee and shit and menstrual blood… I want a man who will let me pee in his belly button"<ref>Garbage, interview with Shirley Manson</ref>. The Garbage song "When I Grow Up" contains the lyrics "Happy Hours/Golden Showers"
  • Cat Chaser - Seattle-based goth/punk rock band that had a small but rabid following partially based on singer Cresta wetting her clothes during the band's performances <ref>Goth catchaster conspiracy</ref>
  • Annie Sprinkle - Multimedia performer and advocate for female sexual enjoyment. Her stage name is derived from her abilities with urination, notably the ability to turn herself into a human fountain.
  • Rockbitch - mostly female band featuring many sexual acts including urination as part of their stage act [citation needed].
  • R. Kelly - R&B Singer, Songwriter and Producer. In 2002 a bootleg copy of a videotape was released to the Chicago Sun Times that showed Kelly engaging in many sexual acts including urinating on a then 14 year girl who is the daughter of an associate and niece of a former Kelly protege. It was announced during his ongoing child pornography trial that the tape will be played in public court. Opening arguments are scheduled for October 13th 2006<ref>Kelly trial information</ref>.
  • Ashley MacIsaac - Nova Scotian Fiddler and singer. In 1996 he spoke with a Maclean's interviewer mentioning his sexual life, including his underage boyfriend and his taste for urolagnia. In 2003 he told an interviewer for the Montreal Mirror that he loves to have men urinate on him. <ref>Montreal Mirror report</ref>
  • In the Canadian band The Hidden Cameras' song Golden Streams frontman and songwriter Joel Gibb appears to describe watersports. In the Hidden Cameras' live show for several years, yellow streamers were thrown into the audience to accompany the song. The song begins with what appears to be a description of the fear and discomfort the protagonist felt during a childhood episode of wetting himself on a cold winter's day, and ends in the triumphant recapture of the sensation in an adult homosexual context:
My golden wand waves down your golden rod
Our gold held high in sunny breezy sky
Then a stream of gold released from golden stone
erupts late at night and melts the winter ice

The golden streams
The golden streams

There are references to being urinated on in other Gibb songs from the same period. <ref>"Passing Water" art exhibit, accompanying text</ref> Nonetheless, in recent interviews, Gibb has claimed that Golden Streams actually "isn't really about anything sexual - it's about building an architectural device to get to heaven using frozen piss." <ref>"Hidden Cameras' obscure out front man Joel Gibb" article by Christopher John Treacy November 02, 2006, In Newsweekly, weekly New England LGBT newsletter</ref>
