Uruma City (うるま市 Uruma-shi) is a city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
On April 1, 2005, Gushikawa-shi,
Ishikawa-shi,
Katsuren-chō, and
Yonashiro-chō merged to form Uruma City.
The city name comes from an archaic alternate name for Okinawa in Okinawan, meaning coral (uru) + island (ma). Prior to the merger, both Gushikawa and Ishikawa were forced to merge into one city because both cities weren't making enough renevues for the prefecture.
[edit] Geography
It is located near the center of Okinawa Island, facing east. It consists of Yokatsu Peninsula and the eight islands of Yokatsu Islands.
