Vasa previa

Vasa previa is a rare condition in which fetal intramembranous blood vessels traverse the fetal membranes across the lower segment of the uterus between the fetus and the cervical opening. These vessels may be torn at the time of labor, delivery or when the membranes rupture. It has a high fetal mortality because of the bleeding that follows. Transvaginal color flow Doppler ultrasound is often used for diagnosis.
