Vosburgh Stakes

The Vosburgh Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses of either gender, three-years-old and up. In its 68th running in 2007, it's run at Belmont Park on Long Island, New York at a distance of six furlongs, and offers a purse of $400,000.
The Vosburgh is a Grade I event, and given its timing in October, is a major prep to the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
The Vosburgh Stakes is named in honor of Walter S. Vosburgh who was the official handicapper for The Jockey Club and various other racing associations from 1894 to 1934. He was also a turf historian.
Forego won this race in 1974, Ta Wee in 1969, Dr. Fager twice in 1967 and 1968, Hall of Famer Affectionately, a filly, in 1964, and Bold Ruler in 1957.

In 1951, Miche finished first, but was disqualified. In 1944, there was a Dead heat.
This race was run at Aqueduct Race Track in l959, l96l to l974, l976, l977, 1979, 1983, 1985, and 1986. Prior to 1979, it was called the Vosburgh Handicap. Prior to 1958, it was open to all ages.
