Voting age
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The voting age is the minimum legal age at which a person may vote in a governmental election.
Historically, 21 was commonly regarded as the age of majority in most countries and included the acquisition of voting rights. Many countries reduced the voting age to 18 in the 1970s (although Czechoslovakia did so in 1946), and this is now by far the commonest age at which citizens may start to vote although some countries allow younger people to vote in local or municipal elections. Countries which allow 17 year olds to vote in national elections include East Timor, Indonesia, North Korea, The Seychelles, and Sudan. Employed 16 year olds can vote in Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro, and all 16 year olds can vote in Brazil, Cuba, the Isle of Man, and Nicaragua. Iran is unique in awarding suffrage to 15 year olds. In the other direction, voters in Uzbekistan and in Italian Senate elections are denied the vote until they are 25 years old, while in the only elections in the Holy See - the election of a new Pope - the franchise is restricted to Cardinals who are under 80 years old.
