WHPR is the call sign of the 88.1 FM radio and TV channel 33 (WHPR LPTV), and is a low-power broadcasting operation based in Highland Park, Michigan. Their parent entity is R. J. Watkins Late Night Entertainment. The station has operated since May 21, 1954.

[edit] Background

WHPR-FM's programming is generally brokered talk programming, much of it simulcast on TV 33. During late-night and some evening hours, oldies are played. The station IDs as "Power Talk 88.1." The station was admonished by the FCC in 2001 for running advertising contrary to its status as a "Noncommercial Educational Station."

WHPR's TV sister station, W33BY, uses the WHPR calls unofficially, and is the Detroit area's first Black-owned TV station since channel 62 (then WGPR) became a CBS affiliate.

The station's television airtime is occupied mostly by phone-in talk shows (most are radio simulcasts), televangelism, fundraising, traditional television commercials and apparently Bloomberg-inspired on-screen advertising. At night music videos are seen.
