"Wake Up" is a pop song co-written and co-produced by Hilary Duff, Joel Madden and Benji Madden for Duff's fourth album Most Wanted (2005). It was released as the album's first single in 2005 (see 2005 in music). According to Duff, it "makes you want to forget about all the pressure of dealing with your boss, or your teacher, or your mom, or [whoever]. It's about getting out and not forgetting to have some fun."<ref name="MTV-Jul2005">Tecson, Brandee J. "Hilary Draws The Line At Collaborating With Good Charlotte". MTV News. July 18 2005. Retrieved August 16 2006.</ref> She described the song's style as "very dancey, kind of pop — not '80s, but kind of with that in it, so it's very fun."<ref>Tecson, Brandee J. "Cheaper By The Duo? In the U.S. it was released to Mainstream Top 40 radio on July 11 2005,<ref>"Going For Airplay". Billboard. July 8 2005. The single's video was directed by Marc Webb, who had directed videos for The Used and My Chemical Romance. Duff said "I'm a huge fan of [the bands he's worked with], so I was really excited that he would direct my video. The [style] looks kind of grainy and it's a totally different look for me." It shows Duff leaving her home and journeying to nightclubs and parties in London, New York City, Paris and Tokyo. "[I]t just shows that no matter where you are, people want [to do] the same things: they dance and they party", Duff said.<ref name="MTV-Jul2005"/> The video premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on July 15 2005 and reached number one on the show's countdown on three non-consecutive days.<ref>"TRL Archive - July 2005".
