Walt Disney Pictures is an American film studio, with off-shoot studios in Japan and other sites in the United States. It is the main motion picture producing studio of The Walt Disney Company, the media conglomerate based in Burbank, California. Walt Disney Pictures is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Studio Entertainment sector of the company. Walt Disney Pictures was established as a Disney division 1983, prior to which Disney films were released under the banner of the parent company, then named Walt Disney Productions.
Walt Disney Pictures also includes Walt Disney Feature Animation which in turn includes the DisneyToon Studios and most recently the Pixar Animation Studios, and is a part of the Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group.
The logo is a silhouette of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. The most commonly known iteration of the logo was in place from 1985; a new CGI logo, animated by Weta Digital, was introduced in 2006 with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.<ref>Old Disney magic in new animated logo. hollywoodreporter.com. Retrieved on 2006-07-28.</ref> This logo seems to be more inspired by the Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort than Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.
Throughout the entire twentieth century, Disney has been the box office leader in animated films and has broken ground in nearly all aspects of animation technique.
Walt Disney Pictures historically distributes G and PG rated films, but Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest were rated PG-13.
