Wanstead is a suburban area in the London Borough of Redbridge, North-East London. The main road going through Wanstead is the A12.

The name means "place by a lump or hillock" and is first recorded circa 1050.

Unlike many "Clone towns" independent retailers thrive in Wanstead and only a few chain stores are present, such as The George, (which is a JD Wetherspoons), Boots and Woolworths Group. Other pubs in the High Steet include Russells, Bar Room Bar ("BRB") and The Cuckfield.

Wanstead is home to a large comprehensive school, Wanstead High School. There are five primary schools in Wanstead: Our Lady of Lourdes, Wanstead Church School, Nightingale, Snaresbrook and St. Joseph's which is an all-girls' private school.

The town has a largely suburban feel, containing open grasslands such as Wanstead Flats, and the woodland of Wanstead Park (part of Epping Forest). It is also home to Wanstead Golf club, which has hosted many of the major events in the Essex County calendar. A notable landmark towards the northern edge of Wanstead is the former Wanstead Hospital building, now a housing complex. Wanstead was recently in national UK newspapers after a mass brawl on The Green involving 500 Wanstead High youths and a gang from Cathall estate in Leytonstone.
