White pride

Image:White Proud White Aryan Resistance Member.pngWhite pride is a term used primarily in the United States to denote a celebration of the heritage of persons of "White-European" racial identity<ref>Welcome to BC White Pride. September 10, 2006</ref>—though generally to the exclusion of homosexuals and Jews, as well as certain other individuals and groups. The term is highly controversial, as many believe it implies racism<ref>Gaede, April. National Vanguard, 2004. accessed September 10, 2006.</ref>; indeed, it was coined[citation needed] and is used as a slogan by a number of white supremacist organizations.<ref>Carlie, Mike. Advocates of white pride argue that white people should be recognized as a cohesive and legitimate cultural group, with the right to advance policies of interest to themselves as such. They often claim that there exists a cultural double standard<ref>Jackson, Thomas. "What is Racism?", Stormfront.org. 2006. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref> in which only certain ethnicities are permitted to openly have pride in their heritage, and that white pride is not inherently racist, being roughly analogous to black pride or gay pride, for example.<ref>Mortiz, Justin J. Feds Rule “White Pride” is “Offensive” and “Immoral”. 2005. accessed August 14, 2006.</ref> According to a University of Minnesota study, 77% of white Americans believe "their race has a distinct culture that should be preserved." <ref>Lee-St.John, Jeninne. However, opponents of white pride argue that movements like black pride and gay pride represent affirmations of self-worth and solidarity on the part of oppressed minorities — whereas "white pride" represents an attempt to reinforce the very hierarchies that gave rise to that oppression. Several anti-racist organizations have argued that ideas like white pride and "white nationalism" exist merely to provide a sanitized public face for white supremacism.<ref>Moriz, Justin J. [edit] Usage
The phrase "white pride" has been used on promotional materials by white supremacist organizations for some time. Notably, the slogan "White Pride, World Wide" appears in the logo for Stormfront, an organization known for its white supremacist and/or white nationalist leanings. It is owned and operated by Don Black, who was formerly a Grand Wizard (national leader) of the Ku Klux Klan.<ref>Faulk, Kent. "White Supremacist Spreads Views over the Internet". Stormfront.org, 1999. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref> White pride has also been associated with David Lane's "14 words", a shibboleth used as a greeting by White Nationalists and white supremacists. The 14 words are: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children."<ref>Anti-Defamation League. "14 (words)", Law Enforcement Agency Resource Network. 2005. accessed September 10, 2006.</ref> The phrase was taken from Lane's work, "The White Genocide Manifesto". White pride movements have been known to exclude certain white individuals who sympathize with, fraternize with, or intermarry with non-whites<ref>White Aryan Resistance. "Racist Games". White Will. 2006. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref>; their term for these individuals is "race traitor".<ref>Naff, Lycia. "Hate-crime defendant's tattoos bared". The phrase "White pride" often appears in the lyrics of white power and neo-Nazi rock bands. An example is Skrewdriver's version of Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto," in which the lyrics have been altered considerably from Presley's original.[citation needed] In the early 1980s, there was an American Nazi punk/hardcore punk band called White Pride.
[edit] "White minorities"
White pride is often tied to the notion that white people can represent, or will someday represent, a minority group. They point out that non-Hispanic whites now comprise less than half the population of California and Texas,<ref>Browne, Anthony. "The last days of a White world". The Guardian Unlimited. 2000. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref> <ref>"Texas White Anglos become minority". Fox News. 2005. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref> and that white people are expected to become a numerical minority in Great Britain by 2100.<ref>Browne, Anthony. "UK Whites will become a minority by 2100" The Observer. 2000. accessed September 9, 2006.</ref> (This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the "minority-majority effect".)
It should be noted, though, that simple numerical minority is not how most sociologists or economists define a minority group. To avoid confusion, some writers prefer the terms "subordinate group" and "dominant group" rather than "minority" and "majority".<ref>Hameso, Seyeoum and Nebo, Tilahun Ayano. "Ethiopia: A New Start?". The Sidama Concern. 2000. accessed September 10, 2006.</ref> In this equation, sociologists argue, white males remain the "dominant" group, even if they come to represent a numerical minority.<ref>Wise, Tim.
