Why? were a British Christian folk band active through the 1990s. The band originally hailed from the West Country. Whilst never becoming widely known in the mainstream they achieved a high degree of popularity within their genre, particularly during the mid-1990s. Membership of the band changed frequently however was essentially built around Ant and Nick Parker, both of whom sang and were songwriters, playing both mandolin and acoustic guitar. The band played frequently at Christian events such as Spring Harvest and the Greenbelt festival. In terms of style and following, Why? was often closely linked to and compared with Eden Burning [1], another Christian folk band active in the early and mid-1990s.

[edit] Style

The style of the band shifted gradually from conventional acoustic folk towards incorporating a greater amount of jazz, blues and electronic elements, particularly in the albums "Pinnenstripensuitenwearenfoddergeburnenclippencloppen" and "Happy". Energy and humour were major characteristics of the band throughout its career, whilst Christian themes were present in many songs with varying degrees of overtness. Other frequent themes included friendship, nostalgia for past times, and satire on life and society.
