Wiggum family

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

In the television series, The Simpsons, the Wiggum family consist of Clancy (father and Springfield Police Chief), Sarah (mother), and their only child Ralph. The family also has a living but unseen grandmother named Clorus. Clancy's father Iggy Wiggum fought in Abe Simpson's platoon, the "Flying Hellfish", during World War II and apparently survived, but eventually died of unmentioned causes sometime afterwards. It has been established by various video games such as The Simpsons: Hit & Run that the Wiggums live on Evergreen Terrace down the street from the Simpsons themselves.

Although their religious stance is never formally mentioned, it is safe to assume from the fact they attend church along with much of Springfield that they are Christians of some sort.

[edit] Clancy

Main article: Clancy Wiggum

Chief Clancy Wiggum (voiced by Hank Azaria) is the father of the Wiggum family. He is the police chief in Springfield. One of the most notable of the show's secondary characters, Clancy is famous for being rather incompetent as an officer and often provides the show humorous scenes where his department and himself botch a situation. He seems to have a close relationship with his family, although he works very long hours and his often dubious escapades most likely require a lot of patience from his wife.

[edit] Sarah

Sarah Wiggum (voiced by Pamela Hayden) is the wife of Clancy and mother of Ralph. She met her future husband when she was arrested by him, after he planted crystal meth on her to make her "notice" him. Her name is derived from an Andy Griffith Show gag. In that show, Andy would call up the town's operator named Sarah, and Andy would say something along the lines of, "Sarah, could you get me Aunt Bea?" In Grade School Confidential, Wiggum similarly picks up the phone and says "Sarah, get me Superintendent Chalmers" and his wife dutifully begins to dial the phone.

Although she is often seen around Springfield, Mrs. Wiggum remains one of The Simpsons more mysterious characters. It is vaguely hinted in some of Ralph's dialogue, as well as some other sources such as The Ralph Wiggum Book that Mrs. Wiggum can be rather disturbingly neglectful towards Ralph, such as leaving the house and forgetting him by accident. Although Chief Wiggum has a very loving relationship with Ralph he often works long hours, which would leave Ralph by himself. This could explain some of Ralph's awkward behavior, but this has not been formally brought up in the series. In most cases however, she seems to be very loving towards her family. Clancy's own opinion of his wife tends to fluctuate between complete love, and possibly slight boredom and indifference.

Considering her son's awkward behavior and her husband's often dubious escapades, she can be seen as an extremely patient woman. However, she may have been driven to alcoholism, as hinted by Ralph's line, "You look like my Mommy after her box of wine." As very little has been revealed about the character, all of this is speculative of course. In the few episodes where she speaks, she sounds like a female version of her husband. Sarah has light purple, neck-length hair and a somewhat stocky build.

[edit] Ralph

Ralph

Ralph Wiggum, voiced by Nancy Cartwright, is the only son of Clancy and Sarah Wiggum. Ralph is a good child, but is hounded by an unknown mental condition, which could range from a developmental disorder to merely having an overactive imagination. He is a well known character on the show for his use of non-sequitur commentary and his bizarre behavior that often provides the show with its more random element of humor. He is quite close to his parents, Clancy particularly although he is quite a handful.

[edit] Iggy

Iggy Wiggum, voiced by Hank Azaria, is the oldest person in this family, he died on November 11, 1979 in a parade float accident.
