[edit] The creation of the City of Shirakami backfired

The district was originally scheduled to merge with Noshiro to form the new city of Shirakami. This merger plan had some serious problems with the UNESCO(Who enlisted the mountains which the name was came from) and the two prefectures (Akita and Aomori, where the mountains lie) Also, people from the Aomori Prefecture almost filed suit against Noshiro and all municipalities from Yamamoto District. On January 31, 2006, the merger committee was forced to dissolve.[1]

[edit] Merger Plan Changes

  • On March 20, 2006, Hachiryu, Kotoka, and Yamamoto merged together to form the new town of Mitane.
  • On March 21, 2006, the town of Futatsui merged with the City of Noshiro to create the new city, also called Noshiro.
  • On March 27, 2006, the municipalities of Hachimori and Minehama is scheduled to merge together to create a new town called Happo.
