Your Mom is a phrase commonly used to insult the target, by way of his or her mother. Used as an insult, "Your Mom..." preys on the fact that people commonly love and revere their mothers, making the insult particularly offensive. "Your Mom" can be combined with most types of insults, although suggestions of promiscuity, obesity, or lack of intelligence are particularly common. Compared to other types of insults, "Your Mom" insults are especially likely to incite violence[citation needed]. Slang variants such as "yo momma" or "yer ma" are sometimes used, depending on the local dialect. Insults involving "Your Mom" are commonly used when playing the dozens. The explosion of "Your Mom" jokes in North American pop culture in the early nineties was accompanied by the release of The Pharcyde track "Ya Mama" in 1992 on the album "Bizarre Ride II". Also, the common use of the phrase has swelled since the release of the film Napoleon Dynamite, in which one of the supporting characters utterted the phrase "your mom goes to college." Additionally, at least one rock band calls itself "Your Mom".<ref>The band Your Mom at All Music Guide</ref>

[edit] Use as a retort

Your Mom is also sometimes used as a sarcastically immature retort to either a mild criticism or even an innocuous statement. The effect of this is usually to mock the person.

[edit] Common uses:

  • Person One states that Person Two does or is something, and the 'retort' is that 'your mom', referring to Person One's mom, is or does the same thing, e.g.:
Person One: I'm going to the shop.
Person Two: Oh yeah? Your mom is going to the shop!
  • Person One says something and Person Two does not know what to retort, or does not actually intend to retort something that makes any sense, e.g.:
Person One: I don't like this CD.
Person Two: Oh yeah? Your mom!
  • Person One says something and Person Two responds with a typically ambiguous statement involving double entendres or sexual allusions, e.g.:
Person One: What are you doing?
Person Two: Your mom!
