Yuri Bashmet

Yuri Bashmet (born in Rostov-on-Don, Ukraine, in 1953) is one of the most prominent contemporary viola soloists.
He has appeared with many of the world's top orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Montreal Symphony Orchestra), and has given recitals in the most prestigious venues. Yuri Bashmet constantly collaborates with leading artists, and has been an inspiration for many prominent composers who have composed for him. Among these are: Alfred Schnittke, Giya Kancheli, Alexandre Chaikovsky, Sofia Gubaidulina. He is the People's Artist of the USSR (1991), a Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and the Artistic Director of the Moscow Soloists.
