Yuri Matiyasevich

Yuri Matiyasevich, (Russian: Юрий Владимирович Матиясевич, born March 2, 1947 in Leningrad) is a Russian mathematician. In 1964, he won first prize at the 6th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Moscow.
Matiyasevich graduated from the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics of Leningrad State University in 1969. He is best known for his negative solution of Hilbert's tenth problem, presented in his doctoral thesis, at LOMI, the Leningrad Department of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics.
In 1997 he was elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences. He currently heads the Laboratory of Mathematical Logic at LOMI, which now exists as the Petersburg Department of Steklov Institute of Mathematics of Russian Academy of Sciences, or PDMI RAS.
