Zapolyarny, Murmansk Oblast

Zapolyarny (Russian: Заполя́рный) is a town in Pechengsky District of Murmansk Oblast, Russia. Area belonged to Finland 1920-1944. It was founded in 1956 as Zhdanovsk and was granted a town status and renamed in 1963. It is located in the Kola Peninsula, 10 km south of the Kola Superdeep Borehole project. Population: 18,640 (2002 Census).
