Zdeněk Burian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zdeněk Michael František Burian (February 11, 1905 Kopřivnice - July 1, 1981 Prague) was a Czech painter and book illustrator. He is known as a painter whose works were an important part in the development of paleontological reconstructions.
His works number more than 15,000 paintings and drawings. He illustrated over 500 books and 600 book covers.
In cooperation with paleontologist Josef Augusta he painted many reconstructions of dinosaurs and other pre-historic creatures and landscapes. Most of his works are done with oils, both in color and black and white, and exhibit keen attention to detail and unmistakable realism, while maintaining a strong presence and sense of atmosphere. Some of his renditions have become iconic, especially his 'Brontosaurus' and Styracosaurus, and, in inflence he is probably second only to Charles R. Knight.
