Andranik Markaryan

Andranik Margaryan (Armenian: Անդրանիկ Մարգարյան) (born June 12, 1951) has been Prime Minister of Armenia since May 12, 2000. He is a member of the Republican Party of Armenia. In Armenia the Prime Minister is appointed by the President. He succeeded the Sarkisyan brothers: Vasgen Sarkisyan, who was murdered by gunmen on October 27, 1999 in the Armenian parliament building and Aram Sarkisyan, who was appointed a week later but fired on May 2, 2000.
Andranik Markaryan has been engaged in Armenian politics since 1965. In 1968, Markaryan became a member of the National Unity Party, and illegal political party in Soviet Russia, and has served on the National Unity Party's board since 1973. Markaryan has been a long time critic of the totalitarian government of Soviet Russia, and expressed a vision for an independent, democratic Armenia. He was arrested in 1974 and sentenced to two years in prison for the proliferation of unpatriotic ideas and activities considered dangerous in the Soviet Union.
In 1992, after Armenia's independence, Markaryan became a registered member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), the first registered party in the 3rd Republic of Armenia, and influenced the party platform with the ideology he expressed as a member of the National United Party. He has served as the Republican Party's Chairman of the Board from 1993 to the present.
He has also been a member of the "Yerkrapah" Volunteer union since 1996 and served on the YVU's board.
Andranik Markaryan is married, has two daughters, one son, and five grandchildren.
