The
Bangor Daily News is an
American newspaper that was founded on
June 18,
1889; in
1900 the paper merged with the
Bangor Whig and Courier. The Bangor Publishing Company publishes the paper in
Bangor, Maine, in addition to several weekly papers that they distribute throughout
Maine. The
Bangor Daily News is one of only a handful of family-owned newspapers left in the
United States, and is notable in the newspaper business for having an extremely large coverage area. The BDN, as the paper is known, is commonly said to report on a swath of mostly rural Maine that is larger than Connecticut. The paper is published six days a week, and has an extensive network of bureaus that includes offices in Augusta, Belfast, Machias, Pittsfield, Ellsworth and elsewhere. On weekends, it includes
USA Weekend as an insert.
