Danny Messer is a fictional character featured in the TV series CSI: NY. He is portrayed by actor Carmine Giovinazzo.

Danny Messer grew up on Staten Island in an "Italian Mafia" family under surveillance (as hinted at in the episode "Tanglewood"). As a result, he formed his own set of hybrid ethics, caught between the world of lawbreakers and lawmakers. CSI team leader Mac Taylor personally selected Danny for his team, an honor and a responsibility that he attempts to live up to each day. His relationship with Mac was severely tested when Danny went to Internal Affairs behind Mac's back ("On the Job") and nearly lost his job. The end result of this was that he ended up being merely removed from the promotion grid and demoted to CSI second class.

Danny is a very suspicious person; though he gets along well with the rest of the CSI team, Detective Don Flack is one of the few people he truly confides in. Danny attended college and played minor league baseball until he got into a bar fight and broke his wrist, after which he went to the police academy and graduated first in his class ("The Closer"). Almost a year after a case that involved the Tanglewood Boys gang, Danny was implicated in a 15-year-old cold murder case. His older brother Louie, a Tanglewood gang member, was severely beaten by the gang and left in a coma. With Mac's help, Danny eventually cleared his name, thanks to a taped confession from the real killer.

During Season 1, Danny's relationship with Mac became strained when, during a critical case, Danny fired his weapon blindly, which supposedly led to the death of a police officer. Ultimately, it was determined that someone else had actually fired the fatal shot. Nevertheless, Danny was taken off the promotional grid. The mistrust faded by the end of Season 2, when Mac talked to him outside the hospital after the events that left Louie comatose ("Run Silent, Run Deep").

When Aiden Burn was dismissed from the crime lab ("Grand Murder At Central Station"), Danny was initially less than friendly towards Lindsay Monroe, the detective brought in from Bozeman, Montana, at Mac's request to fill the gap in the roster. Since then, however, Danny has become friends with Lindsay, whom he affectionately calls "Montana." For the remainder of Season 2, their relationship was one of friendly competition, playful banter, and subtle flirtation. In the season 3 episode "Not What It Looks Like," Danny's true feelings towards Lindsay manifested themselves in his objection to her volunteering to go undercover, and his holding her close to him after he and the team had to rescue her. In the following episode "Love Run Cold," he unsuccessfully tried to deepen their relationship. Despite Lindsay's reluctance to take their relationship further, Danny said that he would be there for her if she needs anything.
