Grantsburg, Wisconsin

Grantsburg is a village in Burnett County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,369 at the 2000 census. The village is located within the Town of Grantsburg. Its name in the Ojibwe language is Gichi-mashkiigiminakaaning (at the great place full low-bush cranberries) due to the Wood River wetland complex, which at one time was abundant with cranberry bushes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.67%) is water.
Grantsburg is situated on the Wood River, which is dammed on the western edge of town to form a small body of water, called Memory Lake A playground and campsite have been built here. The Wood River contiues west and south to the St. Croix.
The terrain is generally flat, and the land around Grantsburg is heavily wooded, though there is substantial farm acerage, especially to the east and south. To the north and west, the land is sandy and of marginal agricultural use. Crex Meadows, a large state wetland preserve, is also a few miles north of town.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,369 people, 565 households, and 332 families residing in the village. The population density was 177.4/km² (459.8/mi²). There were 590 housing units at an average density of 76.4/km² (198.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.06% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 1.83% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.80% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 565 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.9 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $34,423, and the median income for a family was $40,333. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,875. About 7.6% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.9% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
