Involuntary muscle

Involuntary muscle is the term given to muscle tissue that is not under conscious control. This is in contrast to skeletal muscle, which reacts according to the will of the organism. There are two types of involuntary muscle:

• cardiac muscle — a type of striated muscle that is found exclusively within the heart.

• smooth muscle — non-striated muscle that is found within many organs, such as the bladder and the eye, as well as within the blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, the skin, and elsewhere in the body.
