A poodle skirt is a wide skirt, often on its own (worn with a cardigan) or sometimes as part of a dress. It was a popular fad that was worn in the 1950s. The name "poodle" comes from the applique'd motif, which is most often remembered as a poodle but could have been any other animal, such as a flamingo, or another object such as ice-cream.
Sometimes they were transparent.[citation needed]
